What is the best way to learn alternative health techniques and practices?
Q. I have always been extremely interested in alternative health techniques and treatments. I am currently in a very good job that I am not really crazy about. I would like to move into the alternative health field and would like to eventually open a health food store and small health spa. I know it is a process but I want to know where I can start. As far as I know (and I could be wrong) there is no school to go to learn alternative health. I don't know where to start learning and how. Also for the learning process I need to work around my full time job as I don't have the option to not work as I need the income. I really want to start learning about this field and just need some suggestions on where and how to start. Is there… [cont.]

A. What about some books from a health store? An even better start is a web search in Yahoo for "alternative health techniques" that will yield at least 412 results including overviews of alternative health techniques and stacks of other useful information for you. Another useful search in Yahoo for "alternative health practices" will yield at least 2,888 results.

Asked by pao d historian - Sat Feb 16 01:13:12 2008 - - 14 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The possible alternatives are electric, biofuels, and hydrogen. Among these, electric is undoubtedly the most promising. Biofuels are good because the carbon released by burning them was taken out of the atmosphere by the plants, so in that sense there's no net emissions. However, you still have to put the energy into growing the biofuel crops. On top of that, you need to use more land for growing crops so that you have enough for biofuels and food, which means less land for grassland and forests. For this reason, a study recently found that ethanol from corn and even switchgrass will contribute more to global warming than gasoline. There are still good biofuels - for example using waste vegetable oil or creating ethanol from… [cont.]

Is there an alternative to bolting down a vertical air compressor?
Q. I have a 80 gallon 2 stage air compressor. It is currently bolted down to the concrete garage floor. However, I will be moving into a house at the end of the month and the landlord does not want me drilling into the concrete floor. Is there an alternative to bolting down the compressor? Evidently bolting it down gives it structural support against the vibration. Any ideas?

What is the alternative to a petroleum based economy?
Q. America is the largest consumer of oil in the world, with the EU not far behind and China repidly gaining ground. Humanity as a whole is consuming more oil then at any other period in history. At this rate we will completely strip the earth of its petroleum reserves by 2050 (excluding coal and shale). What can we do about it? What is the alternative?

A. A bunch of things will come in to replace it. Wind power is ample and that's off-the-shelf technology at this point, and they've got the bird-kill thing worked out. I have my doubts about ethanol due to the distillation cost, but I think biodiesel is a winner. I think the economics of solar power have changed to the point where you could install a roof panel, fold it into your mortgage and be cash-flow positive from day 1. Moving transport from oil to electric is gonna happen, through plug-in hybrids and railroad electrification, and high-speed rail taking a bite out of the aviation fuel burn. We might have to "twist the arm" of a few countries to get onboard with conservation, but that's what aircraft carriers and the World Bank… [cont.]

A. Top of my head: Coal fired power station. Oil fired power station. Gas fired power station. Nuclear power. (All the above generate steam which is used to power a turbine.) Wind-powered turbine. Water powered turbine (hydroelectric power). Wave powered generation. Tidal generation. Solar power (steam turbine). Solar power (photovoltaic cells). Solar power (Thermopile). Heat and power generation from waste processing. Hydro electric storage, not strictly producing electricity as excess electricity is used to pump water into a reservoir and then the water is used to generate electricity (using gravity fed turbines) during periods of high demand. This is, therefore, a way of storing electricity.

A. I am a former chef from canada and it is possible to leave it out, I would use a bit more cocoa or melted dark chocolate, the sour cream just is used to activate the leavening agents, and for a lactose intolerent person then use the chocolate product, I do not like applesauce it doe leave a bit of a after taste, strained prunes make it nice even date puree.

What is the alternative mechanism that might accomplish the presence of carbon recycling on earth?
Q. Please, help me with the Physical science class question. Here's the full question, if mine sounds complicated. The presence of carbon recycling on Earth (as a buffer against a faint early Sun and excessive temperature later) might strike some as a "just right" scenario. Can you propose an alternative mechanism that might accomplish the same things elsewhere?
Asked by Leona - Mon May 11 06:02:18 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Not sure about the question but as most life on earth is referred to as "carbon based", I can say that the decomposition of carbon, the absorption of carbon by plant life and its journey through the life cycle, and the dissolving of excess carbon in the oceans all have seem to have a stabilizing effect but this is just an observation of chemical interactions that could be thrown into chaos by a number of factors and may not be stabilizing at all but simply evidence that we have reached a measurable equilibrium. Carbon is so common that it is hard to imagine another mechanism based on the same percentages of the same elements that seem to be common in the universe, but varying temperatures and light have a way or revealing other… [cont.]

What is an alternative to coaster brakes on a bicycle?
Q. I am in an engineering modeling and design class. Currently we are working with coaster brakes. I have already made one alternative to the clutch which would incorporate slanted teeth so that it may spin in one direction but lock up in the other direction. Any ideas to another clutch design? A. Well, the obvious alternative is the one that millions of bikes use, which is rim brakes - which have an enormous leverage advantage over hub brakes and place much less strain on the spokes and structure of the wheel. But you probably knew that.

A. As I drive i10 (from Texas to New Mexico) I see the huge windmills. McCamey, Texas claims to be the wind capital of Texas. I also read somewhere that the United States Air Force was the largest purchaser of air power. I have seen a BMW commercial recently for a hydrogen powered car. I wonder about the safety issues using that hydrogen. However, it does burn clean. I recently saw Solar cells for sell that could recharge your cell phone and started to wonder why solar cells weren't used (at least for partial power) in the new hybrid cars (Toyota Prius, Honda Civic, etc.) that are so popular. I would look at all three for expense and safety issues (whatever else your criteria might be) and then you have to decide for your self. Good luck… [cont.]
