(cf. etymology)) is a territory of East Asia that was formerly unified under one state, but now divided into two separate states and a region in northeastern Asia. Located on the Korean Peninsula, it is bordered by China to the northwest, Russia to the northeast, and is separated from Japan to the east by the Korea Strait. Korea was united until 1948; at that time it was split into South Korea and North Korea. South Korea, officially the Republic of Korea, is a free market, democratic and developed country, with memberships in the United Nations, WTO, OECD and G-20 major economies. North Korea, officially the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, is a socialist regime founded by Kim Il-sung and currently led by his son Kim Jong-il. Archaeological and linguistic evidence suggest the origins of the Korean people were Altaic language-speaking people from south-central Siberia, who populated ancient Korea in successive waves from the Neolithic age to the Bronze Age. The adoption of the Chinese writing system ("Hanja" in Korean) in the 2nd century BC, and Buddhism in the 4th century AD, had profound effects on the Three Kingdoms of Korea. During the latter part of the Joseon Dynasty, Korea's isolationist policy earned it the Western nickname the "Hermit Kingdom". By the late 19th century, the country became the object of the colonial designs of Japan and Europe. In 1910, Korea was forcibly annexed by Japan and remained occupied until the end of World War II in August 1945. In 1945, the Soviet Union and the United States agreed on the surrender and disarming of Japanese troops in Korea; the Soviet Union accepting the surrender of Japanese weaponry north of the 38th parallel and the United States taking the surrender south of it. This minor decision by allied armies soon became the basis for the division of Korea by the two superpowers, exacerbated by their inability to agree on the terms of Korean independence. The two Cold War rivals then established governments sympathetic to their own ideologies, leading to Korea's current division into two political entities: North Korea and South Korea. The ensuing conflict between the two was largely a proxy-war. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License Trustworthy volunteer organizations that go to South Korea? Q. I've always been interested in going to South Korea and I really enjoy doing volunteer work, so I thought maybe I could put both together. I was wondering if anyone knows of or even has done volunteer work internationally with an organization that happens have a volunteer location in South Korea? If anyone has any good information I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks! Asked by GoBuckeyes! - Mon Feb 18 17:17:57 2008 - - 2 Answers - 1 Comments A. South Korea isn't a developing country. There are few, if any, areas of expertise that their own people can't undertake. Are you prepared to pay? Because you will need to pay for your flights, in-country transportation, health insurance, accommodation, food, security, translators, training, language classes, staff to create the service opportunities and then to supervise and support you in your service, liaisons with the police and local officials, etc. There is a listing of the more-than-30 member organizations of the International Volunteers Program Association (IVPA) that is a good place to find reputable volunteer-for-a-fee programs -- programs where you don't need to have much experience in order to participate, and the placements… [cont.] Answered by Jayne says READ MORE BOOKS - Tue Feb 19 02:56:50 2008 What are some ways North Korea has shown efforts to get along with South Korea and the international community? Q. What are some ways North Korea has shown efforts to get along with South Korea and the international community? What are some of its less hospitable actions? Asked by Becca - Wed Feb 3 11:07:41 2010 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. The North Koreans' internal propaganda reveals that they don't care about getting along with the rest of the world. They are a deeply racist, deeply xenophobic nation. They never negotiate in good faith - their goal in negotiations is to humiliate the rest of the world as much as possible for the benefit of their own peoples' self-respect. North Korea views itself as the most pure, most clean race of people in the world. It doesn't want to pollute itself with contact with the outside world. Its people are willing to commit mass suicide rather than give up their racial purity. Q. Going to Japan on a tourist visa first, then going to South Korea to get the student visa as soon as I get the necessary documents. But what is the cheapest way to get to a Japanese Consulate or Embassy in South Korea and back to Tokyo in Japan? Japan - South Korea - Japan. The distance between the two countries is like a 45 minute flight so it shouldn't cost too much.
